Camargue Gardians

The Camargue Gardians is a mounted cattle herdsman that works in the Camargue delta in Provence, southern France.

Dating back to the early 16th century, the gardians are a professional order of cowboys who protect and care for the herds of horses and long-horned bulls that roam the region.

They are descendants of the gardo-besti (cattle keepers) of the Middle Ages (A.D. 500–1350) and they follow a code of honour like the knights of old. The Confrérie des Gardians (brotherhood/order of the gardians) was founded in 1512 and is the oldest brotherhood of this kind still present in France today
